A Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) is a birth defect of the heart in which there is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles). The hole allows oxygen rich blood from the left ventricle to mix with oxygen poor blood from the right ventricle, reducing the amount of oxygen that reaches the body.
VSDs can range in size from very small to very large while small VSDs may not cause any symptoms and may close on their own over time larger VSDs may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath , fatigue, and rapid breathing. In some cases, they may lead to complications such as heart failure, arrhythmias , and pulmonary hypertension.
Treatment for VSDs depends on the size and location of the defect, small VSDs may not require treatment, while larger VSDs may require surgery to repair the defect. In some cases, medications may be prescribed to help manage symptoms.
