Spleen preserving laparoscopic surgery in India

The spleen is an organ in the upper far left part of the abdomen, to the left of the stomach and it plays an important role in the immune system by filtering the blood and removing old or damaged red blood cells and foreign substances. Spleen damage can occur due to a variety of factors including trauma, infections, autoimmune disorders, and certain types of cancer.

Spleen-preserving laparoscopic surgery is a surgical procedure that aims to remove diseased or damaged portions of the spleen while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and involves making small inches in the abdomen through which a laparoscope (a thin, flexible tube with a camera and surgical instruments) is inserted. The surgeon uses the laparoscope to visualise the spleen and surrounding tissue and carefully removes the affected portions while leaving as much healthy tissue intact as possible. Postoperative stay is 4-6 days.

Recovery is generally fast and less painful than open surgery. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a 3-4 weeks, although heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for a longer period to avoid complications. Pain medications may be prescribed to manage discomfort, and patients may be advised to follow a special diet to take certain supplements to support the immune system.
