A spinal tumor is an abnormal growth of cells (mass) in or around the spinal cord. Spine tumours can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and can occur in any part of the spine including the cervical , thoracic, or lumbar regions.
Surgery involves the partial or total removal of the spine tumor typically involves making an incision in the skin and then using specialised instruments to access the tumour. The surgeon will then carefully remove as much of the tumour as possible without causing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue or the spinal cord. Depending on the location, size and type of the tumour the surgery may be done through an open incision or through a minimally invasive procedure.
Recovery time after spine tumour surgery can be prolonged . With varying outcomes depending on tumour location , type and patient health condition. Patients are monitored for 7-9 days in the hospital, and they will undergo physical therapy to regain strength and mobility. Follow-up care, appointments, and compliance to the medical teams advice is important to ensure proper recovery. Patients may take 2-3 months to full recovery.
