Revision spine surgery is a complicated surgical procedure that is performed to correct a previous failed back spine surgery or address new spinal problems that have developed. The concern doctor does a preoperative evaluation to determine the cause of failed surgery. Anesthesia (general or regional) is given. Then surgeon makes an incision and removes hardware causing pain, realigns the spinal column and removes scar tissue or bone spurs. The incision is then closed.
The recovery process involves a hospital stay, pain management, physical therapy, return to normal activities, and follow-up care. The recovery process can be long but most patients see significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life after the procedure.
