Microdiscectomy, also sometimes called microdecompression or microdiskectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat a herniated lumbar disc. The procedure involves removing portions of the herniated disc that put pressure on the spinal nerve and help relieve pain.
Although it is a relatively safe procedure , complications such as dual tear (cerebrospinal fluid leak) , nerve root damage, recurrent disc herniation, bowel or bladder incontinence , bleeding , and infection may occur.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and most patients can expect to be discharged from the hospital the same day or within 24 hours.
