A left ventricular assist device (LVAD), is a mechanical heart pump used for patients who have reached end-stage congestive heart failure as the bridge to transplant or destination therapy. We surgically implant the LVAD, Open heart surgery is needed to implant an LVAD. The surgery is done under general anesthesia and you will be asleep the entire time. The procedure lasts 4-6 hours.
