Such compression of the spinal nerve by a prolapsed disc or overgrown tissue needs Surgical decompression +/- Fixation. This is needed urgently when patients have leg weakness or problems related to urine/stools; in other patients this is needed if medicines or other non surgical therapy given over a 6-8 weeks period has failed to improve the condition.
The Procedure involves surgical removal of the soft and bony tissue that is compressing the nerve roots to free the nerve roots (referred to as ‘Spinal Canal Decompression’). This is followed by radical removal of the degenerated discs and replacing it by a strut spacer/bone graft (referred to as 'TLIF'). Finally, the bones are stabilised with high quality medically safe Titanium alloy screws and rods (referred to as 'Pedicle screw fixation').
Fixation is specially useful in middle/senior age patients or in patients severe back pain or unstable spinal bones or when there is excessive bone overgrowth or in patients who have undergone previous surgery with reoccurrence of pain. In such cases, fixation helps to stabilise the spine and provide longer relief from back pain and leg pain.
The procedure takes a few hours and is performed under a high magnification microscope to ensure safety using imported micro-neuro instruments.
