Heart valve replacement is the most common surgical treatment for severe heart valve disease. This is performed through the traditional open-heart surgery procedure.
Common types of heart valve replacement include mitral valve replacement (MVR) and aortic valve replacement (AVR). Prosthetic heart valves can be classified as mechanical heart valve (e.g, bi-leaflet and tilting discs valves) or biological heart valve (i.e, derived from cadavers or bovine tissue).
Mechanical heart valves are preferred if the patient is younger than 65 yrs of age and is already on anticoagulation therapy (commonly because of history of atrial fibrillation or embolic cerebral vascular accident). The benefits of mechanical heart valves is their durability and long life. Biological heart valve also may be preferred in patients older than 65 yrs of age. Postoperative procedures and recovery from MVR and AVR surgeries are very similar to CABG.
Patients with mitral and aortic stenosis, regurgitation, or both are the primary candidates for this heart valve surgery.
