Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Surgery in India

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects dopaminergic neurons in the brain and develops when nerve cells in the basal ganglia (a part of the brain that controls movement) get damaged.

Symptoms of Parkinson's disease include tremors (trembling) in the hands, arms, legs, jaw or head; stiffness of the limbs and trunk , slowness of movement, and decreased balance and coordination. While the other symptoms are depression, trouble eating, chewing, and speaking, bladder issues or Constipation, skin problems , and sleep disruptions.

The symptoms of PD usually start on one side of the body and gradually affect both sides as it progresses. Though there is no cure for Parkinson's disease, medications, surgical treatment and other therapies can help to alleviate some of the symptoms.

Levodopa, effective treatment for PD is usually combined with another medicine called Carbidopa , to help reduce some of the side effects of levodopa, such as nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure, and restlessness.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) , may be useful for persons with Parkinson's disease who do not respond well to other treatment options. DBS is a surgical treatment in which electrodes are implanted in a portion of the brain and are connected to a small electrical device placed in the chest. Symptoms like tremors, slowness of movement, and rigidity , can be alleviated by means of DBS.
