An aneurysm is an abnormal widening or ballooning of a portion of an artery due to weakness in the wall of the blood vessel. A thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) occurs in the part of the body's largest artery (the aorta) that passes through the chest. The most common cause of a thoracic aortic aneurysm is hardening of the arteries. This condition is more common in people with high cholesterol, long-term high blood pressure, or who smoke and age. An TAA develops slowly over time and has few noticeable symptoms. The larger an aneurysm grows, the more likely it will burst or rupture, causing pain in the chest area or back pain, dizziness, nausea or shortness of breath. Your doctor can confirm the presence of an TAA with an X-rays of the chest and other radiologic tests including ultrasound, CT, and MRI may be used in diagnosing and monitoring the aneurysm. Treatment depends on the aneurysm's location and size as well as your age, and other conditions. Aneurysms smaller than five centimeters in diameter are typically monitored with ultrasound or CT scans every six to 12 months. Larger aneurysms or those that are quickly growing or leaking may require open or endovascular surgery.
