A brain aneurysm also known as a cerebral aneurysm or intracranial aneurysm is a bulging, weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. If left untreated , the aneurysm can rupture and cause life-threatening bleeding in the brain.
Coil and flow diverter stenting for brain aneurysms in the internal carotid artery (ICA) is a minimally invasive procedure performed to treat brain aneurysms that may be at risk of rupturing. During the procedures, the patient is placed under general anaesthesia and a catheter is inserted through a small incision in the groin and threaded up to the site of the aneurysm in the brain. Once the catheter is in place, a coil or flow diverter stent is inserted into the aneurysm to prevent blood flow into the weakened vessel wall, reducing the risk of rupture.
