Cancerous tumours can form when cells in any part of the body proliferate and multiply abnormally. Leukemia is cancer that begin in cells that would typically differentiate into various blood bell types. Many type exist such as acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, acute myeloid leukaemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Several patients with slow -growing types of leukaemia dont have any symptoms. Sharply growing types of leukaemia may cause symptoms that includes fatigue, weight loss, frequent infections and easy bleeding.
Treatment is depends on stage, type or severity. For slow - growing leukemias, treatment include monitoring, for aggressive leukemias treatment may includes chemotherapy followed by radiation and Bone marrow transplant or stem cell transplant.
Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) or Hematopoietic stem cell transplant is a non-surgical procedure that infuses healthy cells into the body. It is used to treat bone marrow cancer, lymph node cancer , Leukaemia & Multiple myeloma .In the procedure, healthy stem cells taken from the bone marrow , blood, or umbilical cord are used to replace cancerous or faulty blood cells. The stem cell transplant can be of three types - Autologous (Self-donate stem cells), Allogeneic (Matched / stem cells from a donor), or Syngeneic (Only possible for identical twins).
If this procedure is performed with half-matched stem cells, it is called haploidentical bone marrow transplant . Careful preparation is required for successful results, which include a conditioning for patients with cancer. It might take up to several weeks for healthy , cancer-free cells to grow after the bone marrow transplant procedure.
