Bladder Neck Incision (BNI) Surgery

Bladder Neck Incision is a surgery done to correct the flow of urine in men who have a decreased urinary stream and faces problems passing urine because of a bladder neck stenosis or a urethral stricture. It is treated with the help of an incision made in the bladder neck. Under the procedure, the surgeon will track any obstruction in the bladder neck, so as to remove it.

Steps to take before the treatment

There are different surgical approaches required for different types of inconveniences. Our doctors at Medanta, including our incontinence specialist, urologist and urogynecologist will make sure you are ready and in good health to undergo the surgery. You might also be required to take several diagnostic testing before the surgery.

What happens during the treatment?

After giving general or local anaesthesia to the patient, the incisions are made in the bladder neck. A telescope, Cystoscope or Resectoscope (a thin tube camera) is inserted, which makes its way to the bladder, through the urethra. The attached camera helps the doctor to have a clear view of the obstruction in the bladder neck. The blockage is then removed with the help of a surgical cut, and a special instrument (used for extraction).

After Bladder Neck Incision

Immediately after the surgery, the patient might experience a burning sensation in passing urine or traces of blood in the urine. Usually, antibiotics are prescribed by the doctor post-surgery to eliminate these problems. Self-catheterization may also be recommended by the doctor.

Benefits

The advantages of bladder neck incision procedure are:

. The surgery eases the pressure on the bladder.

. The surgery corrects the conditions such as difficulty in passing urine and urine leakage.

. It also addresses uneven urination problems such as frequent urination or less urination.

Risks

The risks associated with the bladder neck incision treatment are:

Complications like infection, blood in urine, mild burning, pain, or damage to the urethra and bladder, due to the insertion of the medical instrument is likely.
There is a risk of rare symptoms such as serious injury to the urethra, permanent urinary inconsistencies, poor erection in men, and acute bleeding etcetera.

Limitations

The limitations of the surgery are:

. BNI does not necessarily address the exact cause of the blockage, and as a result is not a cure to the problem.

. If BNI does not improve the condition, then a patient may require open surgery.
