Autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ahsct) treatment is started by the doctor drawing the patients own stem cells from the bone marrow or peripheral blood. These cells are kept until they are required for the transplant. The malignant cells are subsequently eradicated from the patients using high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The doctor will then administer the stem cells that were preserved through a vein. The length of recovery varies from patient to patient depending on the the type of treatment.
