Multiple Myeloma (MM) also called as plasma cell myeloma and simply myeloma is a form of cancer that develops when the bone marrow plasma cells a subset of white blood cells multiply and grow abnormally. Healthy plasma cells produce antibodies that bind to and destroy bacteria, assisting your body in fighting illness. Cancerous plasma cells assemble in the bone marrow in multiple myeloma and drive out healthy blood cells.
Patients with multiple myeloma typically receive autologous bone marrow transplantation as their mainform of treatment. The treatment is started by the hematologists drawing the patients own stem cells from the bone marrow or peripheral blood. These cells are kept until they are required for the transplant The malignant cells are subsequently eradicated from the patients using high dose chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The doctor will then administer the stem cells that were preserved through a vein. The length of recovery varies from patient to patient depending on the cancer severity and the type of treatment. Patients with multiple myeloma who received this type of treatment typically recover in 10 days or less.
