Artemis hospital becomes world’s first to treat rare autoimmune disorder (Myasthenia Gravis) through Bone Marrow Transplant

In another ground breaking feat, Artemis Hospital has achieved a status that none other hospitals have. It has become the first hospital in the world to successfully treat a case of Myasthenia Gravis, a rare and complex autoimmune disease through Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) (Bone Marrow Transplant). Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease that leads to varying degrees of skeletal muscle weakness especially those of eyes and face. The rare autoimmune disorder results from antibodies that block or destroy receptors at the junction between the nerve and muscle. Myasthenia Gravis has an annual incidence of 20 cases per million.

In this case, the patient was the Canadian National named Evert Sye Kenter who had developed a serious allergic reaction to pyridostigmine (the mainstay of treatment of Myasthenia Gravis) and was intolerant to second line drugs. He also had Glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency which again limited the number of drugs available to treat his case. The patient had also developed potentially life-threatening autoagression syndrome during the course of recovery which was successfully managed by the hospital.

This case is a testimony to our proven expertise in treating HSCT cases,” said Dr. Pawan Kumar Singh, Head and Senior Consultant, Dept of Haemato-oncology and BMT.

“This was perhaps one of the most technically challenging HSCT performed by us due to the huge limitations imposed by the patient’s condition. Despite several complications, we are elated that the patient has responded well to the treatment”, said Dr. Ragesh Radhakrishnan Nair, Consultant, Dept of Haemato-oncology and BMT.

 “I had lost all the hopes of survival when I was diagnosed with this rare disorder. Thanks to the entire team at Artemis Hospital for giving me new lease of life through the treatment. The entire team kept me motivated whenever I lost hope in the wake of complications,” said Evert Sye Kenter, the patient and a Canadian National, who has now been cured of this disorder.

“The patient will be followed up over the next few years to track his progress,” said Dr. Rohan Halder, Associate Consultant, Dept of Haemato-oncology and BMT.
