Aortic stenosis is a heart valve disease in which the aortic heart valve narrows due to calcium buildup, resulting in restricted blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. Severe aortic stenosis can cause chest pain, shortness of breadth , and fainting and if left untreated could lead to heart attack and death.
Treatment for severe aortic stenosis usually involves a surgery called aortic valve replacement (AVR). This surgery involves replacing the narrowed aortic valve with a new valve, which can either be a mechanical valve or a biological valve made from animal tissues.
AVR can be performed through traditional open-heart surgery or minimally invasive techniques such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR/TAVI). TAVR involves threading a catheter through a small incision in the groin or chest and guiding the new valve to the site of the old valve using advanced imaging techniques.
In general, open-heart surgery requires a longer hospital stay and recovery time than TAVR. After surgery, patients may require 4-6 weeks of rest and rehabilitation to regain their strength and resume normal activities.
