Aortic arch replacement using Frozen Elephant Trunk technique in India

An aortic arch aneurysm is a medical condition in which the aorta widens and bulges out at the aortic arch, the portion of the main artery that bends between the ascending and descending aorta. It is a rare situation that can be a serious health issue and may lead to life threatening complications if left untreated.

Risk factors may include high blood pressure, smoking , obesity and a family history. An aortic arch aneurysm may not present with any symptoms initially, but as the aneurysm grows larger, it can cause pain or discomfort in the chest or back, difficulty swallowing, shortness of breath, hoarseness and coughing up blood. In some cases , an aortic arch aneurysm can rupture, which can be fatal and require emergency medical attention. The diagnosis of an aortic arch aneurysm involves a physical exam and imaging tests such as a chest X-ray, CT scan, MRI and echocardiogram. The treatment depends on the size of the aneurysm, the symptoms, and the risk of complications, small aneurysms may be monitored with regular checkups, while larger aneurysms may require surgical intervention.

The Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) technique is a surgical procedure used to treat complex aortic pathologies involving the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and involves making an incision in the chest and abdomen to access the aorta. It involves replacing the diseased segment of the aorta with a specially designed hybrid prosthesis. The FET techniques is less invasive than traditional open surgical procedures requires a shorter hospital stay and has a lower risk of complications & fast recovery.
