Dr. Rajendra Prasad Brain and Spine Surgeon in Indraprastha Apollo Hospital New Delhi | Quick Medical Evaluation

Top Brain and Spine Surgeon in India. I am a brain and spine surgeon with over 35 years experience in this field and have performed more than 4000 brain and spine surgeries at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi. My area of special interest is spine surgery. I have a large experience of spine surgery for degenerative diseases like microdiscectomy for lumbar and cervical disc prolapse, micro-surgical laminotomies for lumbar canal stenosis and spinal instrumentation using implants for spinal injuries, infections like Tb, tumours, spondylo-listhesis and cervical and lumbar artificial disc replacement. In recent years I have had the opportunity to investigate a large number of patients with back pain and have treated over 250 patients with low back and neck pain with Radio frequency (RF) Rhizotomy. This is one of the largest series in the country performed by a spine surgeon. This work has been presented at the American Congress of Neurological Sciences meeting in the USA. In addition to the above I have performed approximately 1500 microsurgical excision of brain and spinal tumors, both intra and extra-axial. These include gliomas, acoustic tumors, pituitary tumors (Endoscopic Transnasal procedures) and giant meningiomas. Many of these intracranial surgeries have required robotic frameless image guidance or frame based stereotactic assistance.

I performed Asia’s first Robotic spine surgery using the da vinci robot at Apollo Hospital for which we received the British Medical Journal Award in 2014 for the “Surgical Team of the year”. Simultaneously with my clinical work, I moved into the social healthcare field with interests in head injury prevention and neuro-rehabilitation, areas totally neglected in India. Through my work with the Indian Head Injury Foundation for over 10 years, I have helped set up and run three neuro-rehabilitation centres for the less- privileged and was a finalist at the British Medical Journal (BMJ) awards for South Asia in 2015 under the category of “Healthcare Advocacy”for work on decreasing the impact of road traffic trauma through activism and policy change in India. Our programme for the distribution of free helmets to under-priveleged children riding two-wheelers was awarded the British Medical Journal South Asia Award for Non-Communicable Diseases “Initiative of the Year” in 2017. The Primary Trauma Care team in India, which I head, have conducted many head injury training programmes for doctors, nurses, para- medical staff and first responders like policemen. I am presently working with the WHO in promoting Assistive Technology for Neuro-rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities ( PWD’S) and the elderly in the countries of South-East Asia. I have worked in 4 countries and conducted OPDs in several cities in India and Africa. Since 1998 my patients were among the first to travel from East Africa to India for treatment and have operated on nearly 500 patients from Tanzania alone, giving a boost to what is now referred to as Medical Tourism. My clinical and philanthropic work resulted in me being awarded the “ Lifetime Achievement Award “ in 2019 by the Delhi Neurological Society.
